Bittersweet is native throughout eastern North America. In the fall, this vine is covered with yellow and red terminal clusters of fruit. The male and female flowers are on different plants. Bittersweet has small non-showy male flowers on one plant and female flowers on another. The vines have small alternate leaves. Bittersweet is insect pollinated, but their open flowers with exposed anthers will shed some pollen. Horses have been poisoned by eating the leaves of this vine.
